FAQ

What is an MC number?
An MC (Motor Carrier) number is the operating authority issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It is required for carriers transporting regulated commodities across state lines in exchange for compensation. An MC number is separate from a USDOT number — the USDOT number is the registration, the MC number is the authority to operate for hire.
How to check if a carrier is authorized?
Look up the carrier's MC number or USDOT number against the FMCSA SAFER system, like this tool does. The authority status shows Active, Inactive, or Revoked for each of Common, Contract, and Broker authority. You should also verify insurance proof on file (≥ $750,000 BIPD and ≥ $100,000 Cargo) before tendering any load.
What does out-of-service mean?
Out-of-service (OOS) means FMCSA has placed the carrier under a federal out-of-service order. The carrier cannot legally operate commercial vehicles until the order is lifted. Do not tender loads to an OOS carrier under any circumstance — your broker E&O coverage may decline claims arising from an OOS carrier.
